Managed execution
Every figure below is read from the live Chicago Tribune endpoint catalog — 5 endpoints, 9 documented request parameters, and 5 published response schemas — the same catalog Docs and Playground run against.
5 documented Chicago Tribune endpoints, grouped into 5 request families — Article, Author and Headlines, plus 2 more.
9 request parameters are documented across those Chicago Tribune endpoints, 7 of them required — the full input contract is public before you write any integration code.
5 of the 5 Chicago Tribune endpoints ship a recorded example response, and 5 carry a documented response schema — you can code against the real JSON before the first request.
Chicago Tribune endpoints document their error responses (400, 404 and 503) alongside the success schema, so a block, a rate limit, or a missing record comes back as a typed error rather than silently empty data.
5 hosted MCP tools back the Chicago Tribune endpoints, so an agent can call the same routes with the same parameters and the same JSON contract, with no custom glue.

How to scrape Chicago Tribune
The Tribune's public local-news taxonomy makes Chicago-specific research more precise than a single generic city feed. Local News, Crime and Public Safety, Investigations, Immigration, Education, Environment, History, and Marijuana are separate public sections. Select the civic beat that matches the question before collecting full articles; a long-running investigation should not be counted as an ordinary breaking incident. Keep the Chicago-area location, headline, publication date, and canonical URL on each record. When a story crosses beats, retain its source section so the original editorial placement remains visible to later reviewers. A live pull on 2026-10-27 returned 60 section slugs, a news feed of 10 stories covering about four hours, and an 81-story cross-section news feed.
The sections route lists 60 slugs. Besides local-news, crime-public-safety and investigations, it includes suburban titles (naperville-sun, daily-southtown, aurora-beacon-news, elgin-courier-news, lake-county-news-sun, post-tribune), so a metro count does not mix suburbs unless you ask.
Sports slugs name the franchise (chicago-cubs, chicago-white-sox, chicago-bears, chicago-bulls, chicago-blackhawks, chicago-sky) and opinion splits into columnists, commentary, editorials and letters-to-the-editor. Keep the slug with each story.
Most sections return about 10 stories, each with title, article URL, publication time, byline, excerpt and image where the card shows them. The news route gives the homepage top stories.
For subscriber-only articles the article response carries the free lead-in with paywalled set to true. The author route returns name, job title when listed, bio, public email and X handle, plus recent articles.
On 2026-10-27 the news section's 10 stories ran from 2026-10-26 21:50 UTC to 2026-10-27 01:46, about four hours, while the editorials section's 10 reached back from 2026-10-26 to 2026-10-20. Poll fast sections often and slow ones daily, then deduplicate by canonical URL.
The section feeds returned a byline and excerpt on all 10 stories, but the 81 stories on the news route carried no author at all and only 16 had excerpts. Join the news route to a section pull or an article call when attribution matters.
