How to use Evening Standard endpoints

Use Evening Standard's public routes to collect London-first journalism while retaining sections that differentiate city news from culture, business, and sport. The publisher's public navigation separates Going Out, Homes & Property, and Culture, alongside its news desks; these areas answer different local questions, from events and restaurants to renting or theatre. Start with the API's current sections list and use only routes it returns, then compare relevant UK-wide stories for context. Keep the headline, section, publication time, and canonical article URL together. If a London event develops over several days, revisit the article and link follow-ups by event rather than counting each headline as a separate incident. A 2026-10-27 pull listed 53 section slugs, many of them path-style such as news/london, with 56 stories in the news section across about 22 hours.

1. Step 1

   Choose a parent or child slug

   The sections route lists 53 slugs in parent/child form: news, news/london, news/politics, sport/football, business/markets, culture/theatre, going-out/restaurants and homesandproperty/renting. Pick the narrowest slug that fits the question.

2. Step 2

   Read the richer headline fields

   Headline items carry title, URL, summary, publication time, author and image, and the news route gives the top stories with the same fields, so a section pull can be dated without extra calls.

3. Step 3

   Check the paywalled flag on articles

   Article calls take a canonical standard.co.uk URL and return title, description, publish and update times, section, authors, lead image, body paragraphs and a paywalled flag.

4. Step 4

   Send exactly one author identifier

   The author route takes a slug (for example nicholas-cecil) or a canonical URL, never both. The profile has name, job title, bio, X link and recent articles with their sections.

5. Step 5

   Pass path-style slugs exactly as listed

   Sections include news/london, news/politics, news/transport, news/crime and news/world, so a slug contains a slash. Send the listed value unchanged rather than splitting it, and expect nested slugs to behave like independent feeds.

6. Step 6

   Read the daily volume from one pull

   The news section returned 56 stories from 2026-10-26 03:16 UTC to 2026-10-27 00:54, each with byline, summary and image, and the cross-section news route returned 94 stories over the last twelve hours (2026-10-26 12:32 UTC onward). A section pull covers roughly a day, enough for a daily job with overlap.
