How to use Stuff endpoints

Stuff is a New Zealand news company with national reporting and local mastheads. Its coverage spans politics and business as well as community matters, consumer stories, lifestyle, and sport. The local dimension makes place attribution essential: a story from a regional newsroom should not disappear into a generic New Zealand label. Save the section and the town or region named by the article when studying local issues. On 2026-10-25 the documented list held 31 slugs, including nested regional paths such as nz-news/wellington and sport/rugby-league. The Wellington feed returned 52 items from 2026-10-07 to 2026-10-24, yet only 31 URLs sat under /nz-news/; the rest were home-property, politics, travel, business and sport pages. A second pull on 2026-10-27 re-checked the 31-slug section list and the cross-section feed.

Step 1
Request regional slugs with the slash
The list includes nz-news/auckland, nz-news/wellington, nz-news/canterbury, nz-news/north-island and nz-news/south-island, so URL-encode the slash when you call /stuff/headlines.
Step 2
Do not assume a regional feed is a regional story set
The Wellington feed held 52 items over 17 days, and the first two covered Rugby League World Cup celebrations and a bankrupt litigant. Classify place from the article, and keep the URL section as a second label.
Step 3
Handle the house byline
Several items carried the generic byline Stuff rather than a person. Use /stuff/author only where a named contributor exists, and do not group all Stuff-bylined items as one reporter.
Step 4
Parse a 9-paragraph body
Pass a canonical public URL to /stuff/article; Stuff URLs use a numeric id after the section (for example /nz-news/361049776/...). Keep the id as a stable key, since slug words can change.
Step 5
Map 31 slugs from latest-news to quizzes
On 2026-10-27 the sections route listed 31 slugs, among them latest-news, nz-news, nz-news/auckland, nz-news/wellington, nz-news/canterbury, nz-news/north-island, nz-news/south-island, world-news. Use the listed value unchanged and record which slug produced a story; overlapping slugs mean the same article can recur.
Step 6
Use the 71-row strip for freshness
The cross-section news route returned 76 stories from 2026-10-04 15:00 UTC to 2026-10-27 08:07 UTC, with bylines on 76 of 76, summaries on 76 of 76 and images on 76 of 76. Treat it as a recent strip and fetch section feeds or articles for fuller fields.

Returns public Stuff article metadata and body paragraphs from a canonical article URL. A story the publisher marks premium is reported as paywalled, or refused with a permission error when no free text is available.

Required: url.

Get a Stuff author profile

Returns a Stuff (New Zealand) author's profile, looked up by `slug` (for example `damien-venuto`) or canonical `url`; exactly one is required. The response has the name, `job_title`, `location`, biography, headshot, `email` and recent stories. Fields show only what the profile has; shared team bylines usually carry just a job title. An unknown author returns not found.

Get Stuff section headlines

Returns the latest Stuff (New Zealand) stories for one section. `section` is required and takes one of 31 slugs, including slash-separated regional and sport ones such as `nz-news/auckland` and `sport/rugby`, plus `world-news`, `business`, `politics` and `motoring`. Each item has its title, URL, summary, publication time, author and image.

Required: section (31 allowed values: latest-news, nz-news, nz-news/auckland, nz-news/wellington, nz-news/canterbury, nz-news/north-island, nz-news/south-island, world-news, business, money, politics, perspectives, pou-tiaki, forever-project, sport, sport/rugby, sport/cricket, sport/netball, sport/football, sport/rugby-league, home-property, home-property/good-life, travel, life-and-style, wellbeing, wellbeing/house-wellness, food-drink, culture, motoring, health, quizzes).

Returns the latest Stuff (New Zealand) top stories from the site-wide feed. Takes no parameters. Each item has its title, URL, summary, publication time, author and image where the feed provides them.

Lists the 31 Stuff sections that `stuff-headlines` accepts, including regional and sport slugs that contain a slash, such as `nz-news/auckland` and `sport/rugby`. Each entry has a `slug`, a display `name` and the section's Atom feed `url`.
