How to use The Star endpoints

The Star is Star Media Group's Malaysian news title, combining national politics, business, metro, lifestyle, sports, and regional Southeast Asian coverage. A market dataset should keep Malaysia-specific stories separate from wider ASEAN developments. The section directory offers editorial scope, and the article text supplies the state, agency, company, or neighboring country that gives each headline its actual geography. On 2026-10-25 the documented list held more than 90 slugs, from news-latest and sport-badminton to dozens of lifestyle sub-feeds. The news-true-or-not feed returned 10 QuickCheck fact-checks from 2026-10-19 to 2026-10-23, each with type True or Not, and timestamps in Malaysia time (+08:00) rather than UTC. A second pull on 2026-10-27 re-checked the 94-slug section list and the cross-section feed.

Step 1
Normalise the +08:00 timestamps
The Star returned values such as 2026-10-23T18:09:00+08:00. Convert to UTC before joining with feeds that end in Z, or two items on the same day will sort wrongly.
Step 2
Read QuickCheck titles as claims
Titles pose a question (Did a 250kg tapir wander onto a golf course?). The verdict is in the article body, not the headline, so fetch the article before labelling a claim true or false.
Step 3
Pick the narrow slug
/thestarmy/sections separates news-latest, latest-nation and latest-metro from sport-* sports and lifestyle-* sub-feeds. A sport slug such as sport-badminton gives a clean single-sport feed.
Step 4
Resolve the article, contributor and type
Pass a canonical public URL to /thestarmy/article and use /thestarmy/author for the named contributor when available. Keep the type value with the record.
Step 5
Use 94 slugs, mostly latest feeds
The Star lists 94 slugs, with latest-nation, latest-business, latest-sport, latest-metro and news-latest. On 2026-10-30 news-latest and latest-nation each returned 20 headlines with summaries but no timestamps, bylines or images, and 3 and 8 of them were also in the strip.
Step 6
Strip rows have no published_at
The cross-section news route returned 17 stories with title, author, summary, type and url but no published_at or image; a byline appeared on 10 and a summary on 1, so timestamps come from the article route.

Returns public The Star (Malaysia) story metadata and body paragraphs from a canonical story URL. Metered and premium stories return only the public teaser paragraphs the server shows anonymous readers, flagged with paywalled; a story with no readable teaser returns a permission error.

Get The Star (Malaysia) section headlines

Returns the current stories of one The Star (Malaysia) section page, usually 10 and up to 100 on column-style sections. `section` is required, for example `news-nation`, `latest-business`, `sport-badminton` or `latest-food`. Items have a title and URL, and when the page shows them a `type`, summary, byline, image and publication time. Older stories are not paginated.

Returns the current top stories on The Star (Malaysia) home page. It takes no parameters. Each item has a title and canonical URL, plus a short section label in `type`, a summary and a byline when the page shows them. `published_at` is omitted here; the section headlines endpoint carries it.
