How to use TheJournal.ie endpoints

TheJournal.ie is an Irish digital-native newsroom known for breaking reports, explainers, fact checks, and public-interest coverage. Those formats serve different research purposes: a fact check evaluates a circulating claim, while an explainer supplies background to a policy debate. Preserve the format and the claim being examined so a verification dataset does not count the false assertion as a confirmed event. On 2026-10-25 the factcheck feed returned 40 items from July to October 2026 with no published_at: the month sits in the URL suffix (-Oct2026), titles carry a prefix (Debunked, FactCheck, Explainer, FactFind) and the type field varies. At least six titles concern AI-generated or deepfake media. The documented list holds 22 slugs, including investigates, cost-of-living, housing and ukraine. A second pull on 2026-10-27 re-checked the 22-slug section list and the cross-section feed.

1. Step 1

   Take the month from the URL suffix

   The factcheck items had no timestamps. The URL ends in a month tag (-Oct2026, -Sep2026), which is enough for monthly counts but not for ordering within a month.

2. Step 2

   Classify by title prefix

   Debunked, FactCheck, Explainer and FactFind label different formats: a debunk of a viral claim, a check of a politician's claim, and an explainer. Store the prefix with the record.

3. Step 3

   Tag manipulated-media items

   Six titles in the sample concern AI-generated or deepfake media, including a Pink Panther rioter image and a Zuckerberg water video. Use them as their own category.

4. Step 4

   Parse a 15-paragraph body

   Pass a canonical public URL to /thejournal/article and use /thejournal/author for the named contributor when available. The numeric id before the month tag is a stable key. The publisher says significant additions and factual corrections are described at the bottom of a FactCheck, and verdict changes are explained in the article.

5. Step 5

   Twenty-two slugs, including Irish-language

   TheJournal.ie lists 22 slugs (irish, politics, international, business, tech, science, environment, voices, investigates, factcheck, explainer, gaeilge, sport, money-diaries). On 2026-10-30 irish returned 41 headlines and politics 43, mostly with images (38 and 41) but few summaries (6 and 5).

6. Step 6

   Watch for an epoch timestamp

   The cross-section news route returned 39 stories with summaries and images and no bylines, and its oldest published_at was 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z, an empty timestamp, while the newest was 2026-10-30 00:10 UTC. Treat the epoch value as missing; 27 of the irish section's 41 headlines were also in the strip.
