How to use Toronto Star endpoints

The Toronto Star is a Toronto newspaper covering the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario through city hall, social issues, business, investigations, and sports. Its local reporting can support housing, transit, or civic-service research when the actual municipality is preserved. A provincial announcement, a Toronto council vote, and a suburban project should remain separate records even when they share one policy keyword. On 2026-10-25 the documented list used path-style slugs, about 70 of them (news/gta, news/car-thefts, sports/hockey/pwhl, podcasts/this-matters). The news/car-thefts feed returned 7 items from 2026-09-21 to 2026-10-19, all on auto theft, most from the Star's Grand Theft Toronto investigation, none with an author field, and not in date order. A second pull on 2026-10-27 re-checked the 69-slug section list and the cross-section feed.

1. Step 1

   Use path-style slugs as written

   Pass news/gta or news/car-thefts with the slash, URL-encoded. /torontostar/sections also lists news/toronto-election, politics/provincial, sports/hockey/pwhl and four podcast paths.

2. Step 2

   Treat a topic feed as a series

   news/car-thefts returned one investigation: a launch package, a live Q&A, hotel-theft and carjacking pieces and a 2026-10-19 follow-up. Group by series, and keep investigations apart from daily crime reports.

3. Step 3

   Do not assume an author or date order

   None of the 7 items had an author, and dates ran 09-23, 09-22, 09-28, 09-25, 10-19, 09-22, 09-21. Sort by published_at and fetch the article for the byline.

4. Step 4

   Read bodies of roughly 2 paragraphs

   Pass a canonical public URL to /torontostar/article and use /torontostar/author for the named contributor when available. Keep the municipality, because a provincial announcement, a Toronto council vote and a suburban project should stay separate records even when they share a keyword.

5. Step 5

   Map 69 slugs from news to entertainment/television

   On 2026-10-27 the sections route listed 69 slugs, among them news, news/gta, news/toronto-election, news/police/project-south, news/car-thefts, news/canada, news/ontario, news/canada/british-columbia. Treat each slug as its own feed: send it verbatim and remember that the same story may be listed under several.

6. Step 6

   Strip rows carry only a title, URL and time

   The cross-section news route returned 50 stories from 2026-10-29 22:34 to 2026-10-30 04:53 UTC with no byline, summary or image. Section headlines are richer but uneven: news returned 44 with 10 images and 7 summaries, while news/gta returned 45 with no timestamps. Toronto Star lists 69 slugs, and article samples can be paywalled (a 2026-10-30 sample returned 2 paragraphs, about 600 characters).
