How to use Vanguard endpoints

Vanguard is a Nigerian national newspaper with politics, business, metro, regional news, sport, entertainment, and editorial coverage. Nigeria's federal and state contexts matter for public-affairs research: a Lagos transport issue and a national economic measure can share keywords while involving different authorities. Its `/vanguardng/author` route is a byline search, not a contributor profile: each request scans one 20-item feed, and a miss means the byline was not in that recent window. Preserve the state, institution, section, and byline with each article before aggregating a topic trend. On 2026-10-25 the documented list held 42 slugs, including promoted, editorial and columns plus names like education-2 and romance-an-relationships. The business/energy feed returned 20 items, but only one was dated 2026 (2026-09-04) and the rest ran back to 2024-04-30. Authors were account names (Nwafor, olufemiajasa) rather than bylines, the real byline sometimes sat inside the summary ("By Obas Esiedesa, Abuja"), and summaries end with WordPress boilerplate.

business/energy returned one 2026 item among 20, so a sub-section can be close to dormant. Read the newest published_at before treating a slug as a live monitor.

Do not use the author field as a byline
The author value is a WordPress account name. When a summary begins By <name>, <city>, parse that as the byline, and strip the trailing "The post ... appeared first on Vanguard News" line.

Label promoted and opinion slugs
The list includes promoted, editorial, opinion, columns and viewpoints. Keep them apart from national-news and business when counting reported stories.

Returns one Vanguard (Nigeria) story by its `url`, a vanguardngr.com link in the `/YYYY/MM/<slug>/` form; section pages and feeds are rejected. The response has the title, description, times, section, authors, lead image and body `paragraphs`. Vanguard has no paywall, so `paywalled` is never set.

Required: url.

Vanguard publishes no author profile pages, so this returns the recent articles in one public feed (site-wide by default, or one section) credited to a byline, matched on the on-page "By <Name>" line or the site's creator field.

Lists up to 20 recent Vanguard stories from one category. `section` is required and takes one of 42 slugs such as `national-news`, `politics`, `business`, `sports`, `business/energy` or `more/metro`. Items carry title, URL, summary, author and publication time. An unknown section returns an invalid-params error.
